Our herbal remedies for dogs and cats are made using USP organic vegetable glycerin and because of this they are called Glycerites. Glycerin is a clear liquid derived from, in our case, organic coconut oil, that is sweet so dogs and cats like the taste. Not only does glycerin act as a safe, natural preservative, it also makes a very good solvent that extracts beneficial constituents from herbs. At the ratio we use to make our herbal remedies using vegetable glycerin and distilled water they will have a two year shelf life stored in usual household conditions away from sources of heat and sunlight. If a remedy like Stomach Soother is only going to be used for occasional digestive upset and may last a long time, this remedy can be stored in the refrigerator to extend the shelf life by perhaps six months. However, when cold the glycerin will become more viscous and a little more difficult to use with the dropper.
