IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia) is what is known as an autoimmune disease. This type of condition occurs when the body's immune system produces autoantibodies that are antibodies (immune proteins) that mistakenly target and react with an animal's own tissues or organs. In the case of IMHA the immune system attacks its own red blood cells. This is a very serious condition with a high mortality rate. Allopathic medicine has a 20% survival rate, when our protocol is used the survival rate increases to 80%+. Most people understand that the immune system protects an animal from bacterial and viral infection. What many do not realize is that an antigen can be any toxin or foreign substance which induces an immune response in the body, especially the production of antibodies. So when you ask what you can do to prevent a future occurrence of IMHA I would recommend that you limit your dog's exposure to chemicals. In our experience the two major causes of IMHA in pets is exposure to vaccines and flea and tick chemicals. Your dog is not a candidate for future vaccines and should be eligible for an exemption from the required rabies due to her condition and you should never use chemical flea and tick products in or on your dog. In addition, I would recommend a healthy, whole food diet, we have some guidance in our article How to Feed Your Dog, and the Daily Multi Plus as a foundation supplement. There are really no supplements for prevention of IMHA per se, but you can have the medium IMHA Package on hand and even provide it to your dog, because a hematocrit (HCT) count of 36 is still on the low end of the desired reading of 35% - 55%.
