I think the best route for your cat is using our Kidney Disease Supplements. These supplements and herbal remedy will help to gently support your cat's kidneys and his overall health. For his joint pain I would suggest the Elk Velvet Antler as this natural supplement has also been shown to support kidney health as well. If you wanted to try something additional I would suggest a marshmallow root cold infusion. Purchase some organic marshmallow root (althaea officinalis) online. Place one tablespoon in 8 ounces of water (filtered or spring) and leave covered overnight. In the morning strain and you will have a liquid containing mucilaginous polysaccharides that are very nurturing and soothing to the kidneys and bladder. Provide your cat with one tablespoon 2x daily (for larger pets this would be 1 tbsp per 10 lbs 2-3x daily) mixed into meals and the extra can be kept in the fridge for three days. If the tablespoon is too much then start with a smaller amount and work up as he gets used to it. To get supplements into cats it is beneficial to feed a soft food diet either canned or homemade for the supplements to be mixed into. Dogs will lap the marshmallow root up, but cats can be more difficult so you may have to use a syringe to gently squirt directly into a cat's mouth. For your information the medication gabapentin has a common side effect called ataxia which is a wobbly gait and that is what you may be seeing in your cat. Gabapentin can also cause hepatic and renal impairments so shouldn't be used in animals with liver or kidney disease.
