Even though there is anecdotal information found online that tells us to avoid using glucosamine sulfate when kidney disease is present, long-term studies have not shown changes in renal function when using this supplement. In addition, the National Kidney Foundation states: "Glucosamine sulfate is a safe medication for patients with chronic kidney disease." Having said that, glucosamine sulfate supplements are attached to a potassium ion or a sodium ion. Both Buck Mountain glucosamine sulfate and our own Glucosamine Sulfate are potassium. Animals with kidney disease are at risk for high potassium because the kidneys cannot remove the extra potassium in the blood and it can build up. The only way to tell if your dog has high potassium related to his kidney disease is to have his blood tested. If he does have high potassium you would want to avoid glucosamine supplements. For your old dog I suggest two supplements: the Elk Velvet Antler which supports both joints and kidneys and can increase vitality in older animals, and the Bovine Cartilage supplement that provides type II collagen to support joint cartilage. Collagen can also be a good addition, but will add additional protein which may not be a good idea depending on what stage kidney disease your dog is in.
