I admire your desire to find a more natural way to address thyroid disease. You are correct in recognizing that thyroid medication does in fact replace normal thyroid hormone secretion and will lead to atrophy of that gland requiring medication for life. You mention that you were on thyroid medication, and this means that you may, or may not, be able to build your thyroid back up depending on how long you were on the medication. In most cases, a natural approach to hypothyroidism works quite well. As far as feeding your dog, a whole food approach is quite important for all animals, but especially those with a thyroid condition. We provide guidance in our article How to Feed Your Dog.
