Yes, it is a very good idea to support the kidneys of dogs and cats as they age. This is very safe to do and can be used for an animal's lifetime. When using herbal remedies for an extended time period it is recommended to take some breaks so the body does not adapt and can eliminate any excesses. That is why we recommend to use herbal remedies on a five days on and two days off schedule. Please keep in mind that there are several things that contribute to kidney disease in our pets and these include excessive use of medications and exposure to chemicals like those found in flea and tick pesticide products as well as things like chlorinated water. Felines have evolved to obtain the majority of their fluid from the food they eat. However, in households they are fed dry, kibble pet foods that can lead to low level dehydration and damage the kidneys as a cat ages. That is why a raw food diet is the best way to feed a cat or at the very least a healthy, meat-based, wet canned cat food. We have some suggestions in our article How to Feed Your Cat. Next week I will be uploading our educational video on kidney disease which you may wish to watch as it will be very informative. The video will be found on our Holistic Kidney Disease Protocol page.
