I could not find, and have not heard of any, research that indicted that certain herbs can be dangerous for dogs with the MDR1 gene. My research showed that primarily medications and toxins that have lipophilic attributes, meaning they more easily cross the cell membrane and are not as easily detoxified, can be dangerous for these dogs. However, most herbal preparations have hydrophilic attributes meaning they don't easily cross cell membranes and will therefore have less potential for toxicity. In addition, hydrophilic substances are more easily eliminated and excreted in urine. This premise is similar to that of fat-soluble vitamins having more potential for toxicity when compared with water-soluble vitamins. For these reasons I feel that the supplements and herbal remedies in the Degenerative Myelopathy Supplement Package will be safe for your dog.
