Collagen is very beneficial as a supplement that supports hair, skin, nails and connective tissue in the body. However, it can not be used as a primary/sole protein source because it is missing one of the essential amino acids called tryptophan. You can use a hydrolyzed protein but this comes with its own issues as there are several common digestive tract side effects and it is usually sourced from gmo soybeans - not good! I am not sure what the issue with your dog is, but I would guess allergies or digestive issues. What we find is that most animals do well on a normal species-appropriate diet using meat when they are provided with digestive aids, such as digestive enzymes, to help them break down their food properly, along with other appropriate supplements.
