Collagen is a structural protein. The overwhelming evidence available indicates that providing an appropriate amount of collagen, or other protein source, is safe and does not negatively impact the kidneys. I will issue one caveat though, and that is when kidney disease reaches the final stages and the kidneys are no longer effectively filtering out nitrogenous waste products to the point substances like ammonia begin to poison the body, any protein in the diet can be an issue. However, this is end stage disease basically at the very end of an animal's life.
