Taurine is an essential amino acid for cats because their bodies cannot synthesize it, so it must be acquired from the diet. Dogs however can synthesize taurine from two other amino acids, methionine and cysteine (which are found in meat). Cooking may only damage about half of the taurine found in meat, so there is still some taurine in your dog's food and their body's can make more if needed. The Daily Multi Plus does contain some taurine naturally from the glandular ingredients in the formula. Fine for a dog fed a diet sufficient in complete proteins, but not a concentrated amount necessary to provide taurine in a cat's diet that would need a meat-based diet or supplementation. I am confident your dog is getting sufficient taurine from his meat-based, home-prepared diet. However, if you wish to provide some additional taurine supplementation along with the Daily Multi Plus, our Heart Glandular is a very good source of natural taurine. Please make sure you are formulating your home-prepared diet properly, and we provide some information to help in our article How to Feed Your Dog.
