We feel that it is preferable to start supporting an animal that has the beginnings of disease with appropriate nutrition and proper supplementation - medications can always be added in later if needed. We have witnessed great success and I am quite confident that our Heart Support Supplements would be an appropriate starting point for your dog. We suggest avoiding flea and tick pesticide products as the chemicals in these drugs can damage the heart over time. Most commercial pet food diets are low in protein or use poor-quality protein sources. Since the heart is a muscle, chronic low protein can lead to heart issues as an animal ages, and this may be the reason why these types of heart issues are so prevalent in our dogs and cats. For this reason we suggest using a prepared whole food diet, either raw or cooked, or a premix to which you add your own meat. You can also prepare your own diet where you control the ingredients and we provide help in our article How to Feed Your Dog.
